Well that happened. Wow!
If you are like me, you have had a really difficult week. I know some people are feeling relief at the outcome of the election and others of us are simply terrified.
I am so fearful of a descent into authoritarianism. I am frightened for vulnerable people.I feel lots of compassion for those who are victims of hatred, blame, and discrimination. I worry for Ukraine people and for Gaza. Climate change is a huge concern.
At the same time, I can’t let fear keep me from other truths.
I am safe. There is a greater perspective that I can turn to. I am blessed with support and community.
Many things are out of my control, always, but I have control over what I say and do, and I can impact how I feel and think. I want to make a positive impact, so I must stay positive.
While it is important to acknowledge and experience what we feel, it is also important to not dwell, stew, obsess, or let thoughts and feelings stagnate or run us. Feelings must transform and inform us.
Fear passes and can transform into loving action. Despair passes and can transform into compassion for self and others. Anger passes and can transform into commitment to a higher good.
Whatever happens, we can rise up and meet it with our best selves. We have to approach things with curiosity not dread.
This is not an easy time in the world. Our planet needs our love and stewardship and we have to act individually, locally, and wisely. We cannot waste energy on worries.
Let’s reach out to our neighbors and keep our circles shining brightly with love and hope. In difficult times, community is what matters most.
We can support organizations that bring our values out into the world. We can support news organizations. We can help Ukraine and Gaza through NGOs. There is always work to do at a local level, even if the national scene is pure chaos.
We can’t change people’s opinions or educate people we think are ill informed with a condescending attitude. We can seek understanding and cultivate humility.
If you are suffering, I send you a virtual hug. If you are feeling relieved, I hope you have compassion for those of us who are suffering.
If you are caught up with anxiety or upset, try spending a few minutes in a pose called Cook’s hook up (see below). It is calming so that you can go back to being the brilliant resourceful person that you are.
Stay expansive, remember that there is a bigger picture. Look up and out, that helps to calm the nervous system. Focus on the sky and the enormity of the universe. Remember that the world has survived horrific events before. The human spirit is resilient. Keep singing!
Take good care of yourself, please, we are going to need each other hugely!
